Should I consider external support

Hello!

I'm 34 and I  have been taking care of my mother together with my wife for about 4 years. Currently we are considering getting a nurse to support us. Although we can handle it for now we think it might be helpful to have somebody take over cooking and cleaning.

Do you have any oppinions on this? Does somebody of you has a nurse to and can share their experience and which tasks would be the best to let a nurse take over? (We were thinking of as mentioned cleaning and cooking)

Thank you very much.

Caregiver would be a better choice

Hi Martin,

I would like to share my experience with you. My mom is 72 now and we (me and my wife) were taking care of her for the past 8 years. Recently my wife had a surgery for her eye problem (in the month of December 2015) and I felt uneasy to manage both my mom and spouse. I searched for some caregiver services and found C-care Health Services, Toronto ( http://www.c-care.ca/services/home-care-services/ ). I was not sure about whether I took the right decision or not,  but their service was awesome and my mom is really feeling comfortable with her caretaker. We are continuing getting their service even after my wife recovered. So I think it will be better for you to look someone to take care of your mom instead of cooking and cleaning. It will be useful for you both on the off chance that you have some crisis work or something to that effect.

Care Options

Hi Martin,

It has been a few months since you posted the inquiry, but in case you still are looking for help, there are a number of options that can pick up various aspects of caring for your Mom.  My wife and I used to have senior helpers drop in and take care of a number of areas for my mother-in-law, while we still had to do all the appointments keeping and working with doctors.  It got really pricey with all the time racked up by these senior helpers. A couple months ago we started using a personal health hub business to take a good portion of the burden of us and we have saved money as well.  The company is VeruStat (www.verustat.com) and they provided us a health coach to take care of all the care coordination and provided my mother-in-law medical devices to monitor her vitals and to ensure she was taking her medication correctly. The important part for my mother-in-law is that they do all this remotely and contact us if any issues arise. And they are significantly cheaper over the course of a month than paying an hourly senior helper.  We still do have the helper come out to assist with some cooking and cleaning, but we have been able to reduce that time in half, which saves us money even after the amount we pay for this other service. Selfishly for us, we've been able to focus more on our own life and have not had to nag and worry as much about her. They might not be right for you, but worth checking out.  Hope this helps or leads to another service that might give you some relief!
