Caregiver Action Network was saddened to learn about the passing of President Jimmy Carter. After leaving, the 39th President of the United States established the Carter Center, which is dedicated to human rights, peace initiatives, and the alleviation of human suffering.
Both President and Mrs. Carter devoted much of their work, post-presidency, to supporting family caregivers and helping to drive public policies that supported the millions of family caregivers across the country. For National Family Caregivers Month this year, CAN was honored to partner with the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers to brief Congress on caregiving in the US with the joint briefing, See the Unseen. President Carter was also a key figure in the nonprofit housing organization Habitat for Humanity and regularly worked with the organization to build homes for low-income people.
In 2002, Carter received a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in foreign affairs. He helped bring peace between Egypt and Israel through the Camp David Agreement of 1978 and established diplomatic relations with China. He facilitated and negotiated the SALT II Nuclear Limitation Treaty with the Soviet Union.
“President Jimmy Carter will be remembered for his dedication to advancing human rights and ending international conflict, as well as his and Mrs. Carter’s dedication to supporting the millions of caregivers across the US.” said CAN CEO Marvell Adams Jr. “We thank him for his lifetime commitment to public service and work to improving the lives of others.”
