My name is Mary. I am a 61-year-old married woman caring for my precious 93-year-old mother, Josephine, and have been her caregiver for the past 14 years. As a widow, she came to live with me in 1989. I have been married for six years and recently retired. My husband still works fulltime. My mother's health as well as mental faculties are failing. She has become progressively frail in the past two years since experiencing mini strokes resulting in several trips to emergency, resulting in a broken foot and broken ribs. She is now suffering from acute osteoporosis and has fallen several times in recent months resulting in two fractured vertebrae and subsequent hospitalizations for vertibroplasty procedures. She progressively needs more care and help from me. I am worn out. I feel guilty all the time because I want to care for her but also want a life free from the constant monitoring. I have four siblings. They see and/or call our mother infrequently. They don't, and I don't expect them to understand what I go through. I cry a lot because I have no one to talk to who does understand what I am going through. (I don't think anyone can who has not experienced the same.) Where are the caregiver support groups? I have had no success in finding one. Everyone I call thinks I want her taken care of for a period of time when in reality I want someone to talk to who understands what I am going through. My mother is fortunate. Because my husband and I have worked and saved our adult lives we are able to cover many of her expenses, otherwise medicare and her social security income cover her medical expenses.
